ANIMAL SAFARI PARADE AT VALLEY HEALTH SERVICES DURING NATIONAL NURSING HOME WEEK
Herkimer, NY – Valley Health Services’ staff led an Animal Safari parade on Wednesday, May 20, 2020, during National Nursing Home Week, in an effort to put a smile on the residents’ faces and spread some cheer while the nursing home is experiencing no visitation during this unprecedented time. Parading to the tune of “The Lion Sleeps Tonight,” wearing animal print and/or animal costumes and carrying animal balloons, the staff engaged residents, provided them with their own animal balloons and animal crackers on their journey through the Valley Health Services nursing units. National Skilled Nursing Care Week recognizes the staff and residents in skilled nursing care centers across the country. It is a challenge of how best to do so during COVID-19 as social distancing rules have changed much of the day to day activities for staff and residents. However, everyone had a good time participating and, the goal did as it was intended, it made residents smile! Valley Health Services’ staff continue to be proactive in creating monthly activities to engage both residents and staff. From safari parades to hallway Bingo and Yahtzee, I-Spy Thursdays, and color-wearing clothing days, everyone seems to be good-natured and participatory. The Animal Safari was a big hit for residents and staff of Valley Health Services!
